George Henry nourse's war pension
Shortly after his death in 1903, George was not in great shape. He requested a pension from the government based
on his service in the Civil War. The pieces below are very interesting.
As it shows in page 27, George was a Navy Ordinal Seaman who spent most of his time on the wooden boat, the USS Minnesota.
The Minnesota took place in March, 1862 in the famed battle of the Merrimack and Monitor. It was the first time in world history that the ironclads dueled. The wooden vessels were helpless in the engagement. The Merrimack was viciously assaulting the Minnesota until the Monitor popped up between them, saving its certain fate.

George writing about his long term heart issues (page 24) |
|
"I cannot state the time, place and circumstances of issuance of heart disease as I was not aware that I had the disease I have suffered with a pain at times in the region of my heart for the past ten years and with shortness of breath after minor exertion and with dizziness have ascribed these feelings to other causes than desease of heart. I have more or less dizziness all the time for the past two years and am suffering from same at the present time. When I go to bed on lying down I have a sensation of rising and falling, confined to the region of my chest on the left side. I wasn't in the military service of naval service of the United States America to April 22, 1861 or subsequent to April 23, 1864. I can positively state that the above named disease of heart was not caused by my own vicious habits I'm a man of good character and habits, a sober productive citizen." ~George H. Nourse, 1900 |
